BPW International Congress in Mexico-City, Mexico

Dear Young BPW – the Congress is coming faster, only just 11 months, then it will start. The last International Congress took place in Lucerne/Switzerland. That was quite convenient for us in Europe, the travel costs were not too high. For Mexico, I know that especially the flights are not cheap. Of course, the country is worth a trip and one can consider after the Congress, spending the holidays at lovely beaches or with visiting ancient temples!

Young BPW Europe therefore has thought on how to support you to going to Mexico. Together with Veronica Hansova from Young BPW Prague, we have prepared a very very good Paper full with ideas on how to collect money with Raffles – a wonderful and easy thing. This bundle of possibilities shows a lot of ideas and facilities, bigger and smaller Young BPW groups can start and run within their Clubs, Federations and Associations. Please don’t hesitate to run this on local or national level to help as many Young BPW as possible in your Federation to come to Mexico!

For any questions on that, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

BPW International Competition: Find new lyrics or new lyrics and rhythm for the BPW Anthem !

The Sound of BPW International Anthem

The competition for BPW International Anthem is expanding to allow BPW Affiliates to propose either (a) new lyric for the old rhythm of BPW International Anthem OR (b) the new rhythm and the new lyrics for BPW International Anthem. Countries that expressed interest may download the current rhythm and its music notes from BPW International's web site: http://www.bpw-international.org/publications/library-anthem.htm

The musical score, the lyric in English, and the CD of the proposed BPW International Anthem in two versions: rhythm only version and rhythm and lyric version should be submitted to BPW International's President Office no later than 31 December 2007. The top 3 finalists of BPW International Anthem will be played and voted on during the XXVI BPW International Congress in Mexico City, Mexico.

History of the Anthem

BPW International Anthem was composed by Professor Consuelo Amador de Rivera. It was originally composed as National Anthem for BPW Mexico in 1984 with lyric in Spanish. At the 21st BPW International Congress in Nagoya, Japan in year 1993, a resolution was passed to adopt the anthem as BPW International Anthem. The anthem was played at the 22nd BPW International Congress in Venice, Italy. Yet, most affiliates are not familiar with it. As a part of branding in Organization Reform process, President Chonchanok Viravan decided to have this anthem re-mastered and redistributed. The first version, released at North America Regional Conference in Jamaica, February 2007 was re-mastered based on the old tape recording of the anthem. However, the anthem was revised with respect to the actual music notes after President Chonchanok met and received the notes from Professor Consuelo in March 2007.

Relaunch BPW Anthem

One of the best kept secrets of BPW International is that we have BPW International Anthem! The anthem has been re-mastered and is available in CD format. Let's start a tradition of playing BPW International Anthem at the beginning of BPW International events! Looking forward to have many clubs/federations/members participate in this competition in Mexico City, Mexico too.

Best Regards,

Naphaphen Vejjajiva (Deon)

Director of BPW International President's Office

As the benefits, BPW members world-wide receive a 5% discount on the cost of the registration fee (after January 1, 2008). BPW members may also list their products and services in WEXPO (Women-EXPO) Online and receive training opportunities through valuable on-line events.

Moreover, BPW International can also nominate speakers for various session of this event (though the final selection is made by Global Summit of Women, not by BPW).

As BPW International's membership already covers all BPW affiliates, your club / Federation need not to apply as Global members.

This year Global Summit of Women in Berlin was participated by many BPW members who found the experience to be very positive and beneficial.  This year, we have 6 speakers from BPW in Berlin, which help make BPW highly visible.

I hope BPW members would again find these benefits valuable. For more information about Global Summit of Women 2008, please kindly visit  www.globewomen.com.

World Economic Gender Gap

Geneva, Switzerland, Thursday 8 November – Four Nordic countries, Sweden (1), Norway (2), Finland (3) and Iceland (4) once again top the latest Gender Gap Index released today by the World Economic Forum. All countries in the top 20 made progress relative to their scores last year – some more so than others. Latvia (13) and Lithuania (14) made the biggest advances among the top 20, gaining six and seven places respectively, driven by smaller gender gaps in labour force participation and wages.

The performance of the United States (31) was mixed over the last year – its scores on political empowerment improved but this was offset by a bigger gap on economic participation – causing the United States to lose 6 places relative to its rank in 2006. Switzerland (40) loses 12 places relative to its position in 2006. The change was the result of a correction made by the UNDP in its calculation of estimated earned income for women and men – the ratio between women’s and men’s incomes is now larger than previously reported (0.61 in 2007 vs 0.9 in 2006). Switzerland's scores on all other variables remain largely static. France (51) remains one of the few countries holding the number one ranking on both education and health and has made considerable progress relative to its 70th position in the 2006 ranking. This significant increase is due to an improvement in the ratio between women’s and men’s labour force participation rates as well as the availability of new data on women in skilled employment. Calculations based on the new data show that the proportion of women among "professional and technical workers" as well as the proportion of women among "legislators, senior officials and managers" increased. In the bottom half of the rankings, countries such as Tunisia (102), Turkey (121) and Morocco (122) not only fall further in the relative rankings but also show a drop in scores relative to their own performance last year. On the other hand, Korea (97), the United Arab Emirates (105) and Saudi Arabia (124) show encouraging improvements in their 2007 scores as compared to their 2006 scores.
